Growing up in Raleigh, North Carolina, Brewer, Jr. moved to Los Angeles where he became known for his appearances in the James Cameron films "Piranha II: The Spawning" (1982) and "The Abyss" (1989). Years of scuba diving off the coast of North Carolina helped in both of these roles. The film "The Abyss" was dedicated to his memory.
