Auteur Nahid Persson turned out to be quite a fortunate woman. She managed to flee Iran shortly after the revolution and find an home in Sweden where she has remained ever since. She still cares deeply for her homeland though and visits it regularly - increasingly appalled by what she sees on the streets. Despite it being illegal, prostitution and narcotics are common here and can be obtained without much difficulty. To illustrate this we are introduced to two young women/mothers who struggle to make a living turning tricks for $10 or $20 a time whilst nourished by the odd dose of heroin. These aren't reckless women. They take precautions with their clients and try their best to bring up their children so as to ensure a similar fate does not await them, but from the images we see here for an hour you wouldn't bet against that. Their stories are candid and forthright; their clients range from horny cab drivers to abusive authority figures and they appear to have an acquired tolerence for the violence that often accompanies their trade. What I wasn't aware of, though, was the concept of the "signeh". If you've heard of renting a room by the hour, or the day, or maybe even the month - then this is the marital equivalent. Here, it's a sixty-five year old, already married, man who decides he wants to temporarily marry one of these ladies. It's all perfectly legal and it isn't about love or affection, it's about him getting laid when he wants and her getting a stipend of sorts to keep her and her child fed and off the streets. There isn't a narration to this film really, just a variety of running commentaries from the pair as they describe their lives, introduce us to some of their "business partners" and leave us in no doubt that the role of women in this society is little better than that of a camel - indeed, perhaps not as valued. God is frequently referenced by both sides in this debate as if he were supportive of a man's right to essentially own a woman and equally ready and waiting to protect these victims from these predatory men. Has he a foot on both sides of the fence or is he completely disinterested in all of them? Faith here is used as a justifier for one and as a faint hope for the other - with neither really having any justification for their divine optimism. There are plenty of nations around the world where the legal position of the sex industry and it's actual operation are hypocritically compromised, so Iran is probably no worse than many places where women are treated as chattels, but this film really does put us front and centre with two personable women in a situation that is hard to watch.
