Warning: this movie is not easy to appreciate unless you are reasonably well versed in the darker chapters of Finnish history.

The film assumes that the audience already knows the events, the political background, and at least some of the main characters. It explains remarkably little. In that sense, it does not really tell the story of Eetu Salin and the Finnish Civil War so much as build on a story it expects you to know.

The film is constructed almost as a mixture of cinema and theatre, with deliberately sparse sets and a highly minimalist visual style. For this particular story, the approach works exceptionally well. But again, you need to know what lies behind what you are seeing.

Much of the emotional weight comes from things that remain largely outside the frame: years of poverty and hunger, the bitterness of the labour movement, the famine and food shortages, the decision to launch the uprising, the brutality of the Civil War, and the reprisals that followed it. You do not need to know Salin’s personal story beforehand. But you do need a reasonable grasp of the historical and political background to understand his motivations, loyalties, and the choices he struggles with.

For a Finnish viewer familiar with this history, the film can therefore be remarkably powerful. For a non-Finnish viewer coming in without that background, it may be a tall order. Too much of what gives the film meaning is assumed rather than explained.

That is also, perhaps, its greatest strength: it refuses to turn history into exposition. It treats the audience as if these events were still part of a shared cultural memory. Whether that works for you depends very much on whether they actually are.
