This is by far the most stylish and good looking movie adaptation of the fairy tale: historical costumes without any kitsch, beautiful bavarian landscapes contrasted by a very clean and minimal fairy tale world up in the clouds. If the script wasn’t so lackluster and the editing so half-assed, this could be a pretty awesome movie version of the classic tale!

Given its age, you can easily forgive the film for most of its old-fashionedness, but unfortunately it becomes painfully obvious time and again—likely partly due to the direction and partly to the editing—that there is absolutely no sense of timing or rhythm, and the cuts are so clumsy that even on the first viewing, you find yourself missing scenes whose existence you can only guess at. Why the film was forced to be kept under 60 minutes therefore remains the biggest question in the end.

The fact that "Gold-Marie" had to become part of a love story—even though the beauty of the original fairy tale lies precisely in the absence of men, and that the wicked stepmother and her lazy daughter had to be given big, pointed noses—is verging on bad taste. In that sense the movie is truly a "child of its time".
