"A powerful reminder that when the land burns, it is not only the forests we lose."

The Fire in Our Hearts is far more than a documentary about wildfires. It is a deeply human story about loss, resilience, belonging, and the extraordinary connection between people and the land they call home.

*Disclosure:* I am honored to have believed in this film from the beginning and to be one of its Executive Producers.

Unlike many of my other productions, I wasn't involved in the filming or the day-to-day creative process. In fact, I only saw the film once it was completed.

And sometimes, that's a wonderful thing. Sometimes you simply believe in a story, in the people telling it, and in the importance of its message. You put your trust in the filmmakers, step aside, and let them do what they do best.

Then, one day, you get to sit down and experience the finished film almost like any other audience member.

The Fire in Our Hearts reminded me why I love being part of filmmaking. Not every story needs to be told for commercial reasons. Some stories simply deserve to be told.

"The Story"
Set against the devastating wildfires of British Columbia, Josias Tschanz's documentary brings an often-overlooked perspective to the forefront: that of the Cheslatta Carrier Nation, whose relationship with the land reaches far beyond property, resources, or geography. For Indigenous communities, the destruction of a forest can also mean the destruction of heritage, memory, and identity.

What makes this documentary particularly meaningful is its focus on the people behind the headlines. Wildfires are often reduced to statistics — hectares burned, homes destroyed, billions in damages. But numbers cannot capture what it means to watch a place that has shaped generations disappear.

The film raises questions that stay with you long after the credits roll. What does it mean to lose your homeland? How do communities rebuild when the landscape itself has changed? And what responsibility do we carry toward the generations who will inherit what remains?

There is an important distinction between documenting a disaster and telling the story of those who must live with its consequences. The Fire in Our Hearts understands that distinction.

A moving, relevant, and necessary documentary that deserves a much wider audience.
