In something of the spirit of "The Day the Earth Stood Still", an advanced alien race sends a robot called "Friendship" (Tilda Swinton) to chat to the people of the world. Unfortunately, their aim isn't so good so instead of arriving in Boston (USA) she arrives in Amman at the height of the early 1970s "Black September" troubles between the Kingdom of Jordan and the PLO. Luckily for her, she alights on veteran British journalist "Sullivan" (Bill Paterson) who learns of her identity and purpose and then shares conversation in his hotel room about just what humanity means while he tries to organise some exit papers for them both. "Friendship" has some lovely terminology for human beings and their obsession with bodily fluids - she, of course, having none - and with their functionality and dependance on what she sees as irrational and/or unnecessary elements whilst he tries to extol the virtues of having life, choice, memories and experiences that evolve. Both are programmed to an extent - one by a computer and another by nature, but is one the more virtuous or capable of expression and emotion? There is very little actually happens here, it's not a sci-fi film in any traditional sense and indeed it could actually just be a philosophical chat between two people of different perspectives, but Swinton somehow manages to imbue her character with a degree of automation - maybe it's the unnaturally hollow accent - that enables us to look at her as a thing rather than a person whilst Paterson presents considered rebuttals to her statements that don't always suggest he is in complete disagreement. What does it mean to be sentient? Is that different from being alive? Need it be? Is artificial learning any less valid than that which is chemically crafted? There are a few quite thought provoking aspects to this that are probably more relevant forty years on than they were at the time and the denouement is also quite interesting, too.
